Fire Badly Damages Locally-Owned Business
Monday, March 15, 2010
It’s always a bummer to cover fires because of other peoples’ losses, and often the smell reminds me of a bad fire that happened at my own house a couple of years ago. I lost a bunch of camera gear and pictures in that one. Luckily I have never encountered any serious injuries related to fires, which was also the case this Sunday afternoon.
Top photo: On Sunday a fire damaged a single-story building in the Green Lake neighborhood of Seattle at 7214 Woodlawn Avenue NE at approximately 4 p.m. Taylor Stage, who works next door at Mockingbird Books, described the scene: "We ran out the door, looked to our left, and all we saw was glass exploding out of the building." The cause of the fire was an overheated power cord in a small computer-related business owned by Green Lake resident John Powers. An adjacent space, part of Billings Middle School, was less affected. There were no injuries.
Second photo: John Powers, whose business was severely damaged, watches firefighters work while standing with his daughters Ella, 5, and Hanna, 13.
Third photo: The fire took place during a busy Sunday afternoon in the Green Lake neighborhood and drew dozens of spectators, including Max Calian, center, his sister Roxanne and parents Nicole and John.
Fourth photo: An onlooker inspects the damage from the backside of the building.
